Having been trained in hand to hand combat, the Spartan sword was the most effective weapon for a warrior in a phalanx. A high degree of respect and practiced skill was required for the warriors to maintain their formations in battle.

A short and brutal battle during the many wars like the Polynesian War, the Greco Persian Wars, the Battle of the Marathons, eulogized by many a poet and historian, repeatedly speak of the Spartan sword and the shield as the primary weapons for the fighters.

A statue of King Lyonidas I in Sparta is a great example of a warrior king, something that every Spartan was brought to do since birth, fight for their honor and respect for the country. The country was above everything else and one would either come back a champion from a war or be killed for ones own country. King Lyonidas Spartan sword held ready for battle in combat stands testimony to the Spartans significance of standing up for their rights and their country. The nation was above everything else. Aristotle had taught this in most of his writings.

Life has moved on from the fifth century BC. Modern methods of warfare have evolved and people have evolved technologically. At the press of a button man is able to destroy, annihilate a whole nation, without so much as moving an extra muscle. The age of innovation has pushed us on to new frontiers the Greeks would never have imagined. But they were the original creators of democracy, they sowed the seeds of a civilized democratic society, taught the world organized, disciplined methods of warfare. The Spartan sword remains today a symbol of a nation which raises its artistic weapon high over its head, ready for action, ready for anything to die with honor for ones country and ones fellow men.

The acting industry is a tough industry to get into. It is very competitive and cut-throat and unless you have some real talent and a good agent to represent you, you might not make it into the industry. There is hope for you though, if you are one hundred percent confident that you want to be an actor and won't stop until your dream has been fulfilled, there are some things that you can do to position yourself for success. I will go into each of these below.

1- You need to start training NOW! Work hard at it every day and don't stop no matter how good you think you are getting or how good others say that you are. Practice and work makes perfect.

2- Become a student. You should study the industry in depth. Learn how everything works. You should know exactly who casts what and what certain agents look for in an actor. Knowing these things will help you know what you need to do to get in.

3- This is very important; you need to figure out what your type of acting is. Pick a niche or genera and go for it.

4- Again, become a student. You need to learn the basics of business, professional networking, and how to market yourself. Self promotional skills are very important in the acting industry.

5- Learn how to audition. You may not believe it, but auditioning and acting on a set are two completely different things. If you can learn how to audition, you will be one step ahead of your competition.

6- I have always believed that in order to be successful in anything, you need to surround yourself with successful people. It is the same in the acting world. Seek out people who are already acting and are already in the industry. Stay away from those exactly like you, I mean those trying to get into the industry.

7- Talk to both actors who are currently acting. You should also talk to actors who have been aspiring to break into the industry for the last few years. You can learn a lot from both groups of people. Once you learn what to and what not to do, you will be much better off.

8- Always be humble and willing to learn. Once you think you know it all, you are setting yourself up for failure.

9- Once you start to understand what you are doing and start to see success, you should take the time to help others who are in the same position that you were once in. You will see that it will pay off for you in the long run.

If you truly take the time to start practicing these things on a regular basis, you will begin to move yourself into a position to more likely be discovered. If you let anything or any excuse stop you from becoming an actor, which simply means that it is not the industry for you. You should always be self evaluating yourself and make sure this is what you want. If you don't have a strong passion or burning desire to do this, you will never make it.

Although many may disagree, I think that the best sci fi can affect us in ways that are beneficial to all of society. Sometimes, it can even guide our thinking, helping us to new levels of creativity that we might otherwise not have achieved.

Main stream literature can inspire as well, but it usually only deals with the standard tropes of life, death, and how we deal with them. It is often so concerned with realism that it neglects imagination.

The best sci fi, however, can enlarge our perceptions and help us follow new avenues of thought. It can help us imagine what an artificial intelligence might be like. Or a species from another planet. In doing so, it also helps us look at ourselves in new ways.

Creativity can also be enhanced. Think of the influence Jules Verene and his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea had on submarine designers. It's not a coincidence that the first nuclear submarine was named the Nautilus.

Traditional tales rarely explore the human experience in as many different ways as science fiction does. They are constrained by convention, and this often stifles the opportunity to let the imagination run wild.

Any writer that can create a world or an alien from scratch, and make it seem real, must have the same skills as any regular author. They should be taken just as seriously, and not dismissed because they choose to write in a different genre.

Too many critics often dismiss stories that aren't totally based on facts and reality. This is a shame, because they are missing the point of good story telling.

The point of all fiction, no matter what genre, is to convince readers that an imagined world or series of events is real. It makes no sense to shun stories that don't take place in the actual world, because all stories are essentially "made up."

For these reasons, it should be apparent that all fiction, no matter what genre it happens to adhere to, is an effort to change or escape reality. The most talented authors will also teach us some valuable lessons about ourselves along the way.

The innovation and creativity that the best sci fi offers the literary world should not be underestimated. More serious study should be given to this unique form of literature.
